Trip to the Elms

Today we braved the rain and went to the Elms Mission house in Tauranga. Unfortunately the camera batteries didnt last so we only got a few photos and the ones Mr Hanna took are a bit blurry but we did get some time at the end of the day to talk about what we had learned from our time there. Here's what we learned today.

They didn’t just have pens that we have they have little things that you dip things in and write

There was trap door in the library where they could hide their valuable things Summer

Alfred Brown had something wrong with his eyes so he had to wear glasses

The real chapel was taken so they built a new one

One of the trees got struck by lightning and it grew again differently

If it was pouring with rain at night they had to use a bowl for a toilet

Alfred Brown has a first wife who was Charlotte then she died so he married again

In the old days paper was very expensive and they didn’t have envelopes so they folded the letter into an envelope

The Elms is 170 years old and the people looking after it want it to last for another 170 years so we have to look after it

Alfred Brown and his first wife asked Maori people to help them to build their house. They paid them with fish hooks and spades.
